The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratories (OBL) is a unique research facility uniting the work of clinicians, engineers, and biologists dedicated to applied basic science research of the musculoskeletal system of humans and animals. We invite you to visit our facilities, meet our personnel, and get an inside look at our day-to-day activities in orthopaedic biomechanics.

The primary focus of our research laboratories is to understand mechanisms of osteoarthrosis and investigate methods of diagnosis, intervention, and prevention of this disease. In these investigations, the OBL utilizes in vivo animal models, human cadavers, and mathematical models to study blunt joint trauma. The OBL also conducts experiments on athletic and workplace footwear in cooperation with various manufacturers. These studies specifically examine the durability, comfortability, and the ability of footwear to help protect the body from injury. The OBL regularly performs co-operative studies with orthopaedic manufacturers to assist in the evaluation and development of new products and devices.

Through experimentation involving biomechanical tests, histological analyses, biochemical assays, and mathematical model analyses, we seek to answer the many questions that evolve when studying various musculoskeletal diseases and related problems. Visit our Research link for more information about our laboratories.

Some of the work of the OBL has been recently recognized by the following awards: the H. Ed Cabaud Research Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (1989), an Innovation Award from the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (1996), the O'Donoghue Award for Clinically-Based Research from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (2000), and a Research Excellence Award from the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (2000).
